Platts: Natural gas trading volume jumps 30% in January: CME Group

Volatility in the natural gas market due to frigid temperatures in January has led to a 30% increase in the average daily volume for natural gas futures and options at CME Group, the company said Tuesday.

Average daily volume for all natural gas contracts including NYMEX was 736,238 contracts a day, compared with 564,791 in January 2013, a 30% increase year over year.

This is the second month of strong growth for natural gas as traders and producers alike have had to increase their use of risk management products at the exchanges as natural gas prices have moved dramatically in response to cold weather and gas inventory data.
