Ukraine has suggested creating groups at control centers and gas measuring stations to monitor the transit of Russian gas via its territory to make sure Kiev meets its transit obligations, Energy and Coal Minister Yury Prodan said Thursday in a letter to E.U. Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger.
Prodan also said that Ukraine will tighten the security of its gas pipelines to prevent possible attacks. “We are tightening the security of the gas transportation system units to prevent possible attacks. Unfortunately, in the current situation we see the risk of such attacks as very high,” he said.
This letter followed Tuesday’s explosion of a section of the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod gas pipeline. The Ukrainian police said that the blast was caused by a bomb. The gas flow was directed to a parallel pipeline.
